Chili Cook-Off Winners

Fans of homecooked chili and the Banner Creek Science Center and Observatory raised more than $1,600 during Saturday’s 16th-annual Chili Cook-Off, held in conjunction with Fall Fest, it was reported.

A total of 19 different varieties of chili were served during the cook-off, held on Holton’s Town Square, where visitors could vote for their favorite chili, as well as the most appealing booth. Cook-off participants were asked to decorate their booths with an astronomy-related theme.

A total of 34 “blue ticket” votes were cast in favor of The Holton Recorder’s Connie Powls, who took first place in the “People’s Choice” competition, where it was announced the winner would receive a gift basket with items from local businesses. Jayhawk TV and Appliance took second place with 28 blue tickets, followed by The Farmers State Bank and The Recorder’s Shannon Schmille with 18 blue tickets each.

Chili fans could also vote with their red tickets for the best booth, and in first place with 28 red tickets collected was Holton Dental, whose “May the Floss Be With You” theme earned a cash prize of $25. Second place, with 26 red tickets, was Carolyn Cochren, followed by Therron and Becky Fox with 23 red tickets.

The winner of the “Best Saturday Sampler Chili of 2016” award, along with a cash prize of $50, was the chili offered by Holton National Bank. Cochren and Bob Lamberson tied for second in this competition, followed by Powls.
