Chili cook-off, Fall Fest is Saturday

Those attending this Saturday’s chili and soup cook-off will not go hungry, as 15 entries have already been confirmed for the friendly competition.

The cook-off is being held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. that day, and cooks will be set up in front of businesses around the town Square. The event is a fund-raiser for the Holton Fire Department.

Cooks confirmed for the event include Bob Lamberson, Shannon Schmille, Jennifer Mitchell, Ron Cook, Rob Ladner, Holton National Bank, Rhino Fitness, April Lemon, Alex Kovalchuk, New Life Church of the Nazarene, Craig and Talon Fox, Rodney and Tracy Humbert, Holton Community Hospital and Connie Martin with Penny Miller.

Additional individuals or teams interested in participating in Saturday’s event can still compete by calling The Holton Recorder at 364-3141. There is a $1 entry fee.

Cooks must set up their tables by 10:45 a.m. for judging and public participation at 11 a.m. In addition to the four or five gallons of soup or chili, participants must provide their own table, extension cord for electric hook-ups, a large electric cooker/roaster to keep their food warm and large bowls to serve residents who wish to purchase a larger bowl of their food. Cooks are also encouraged to decorate their display.

The power outlets located in the flowerbeds in front of businesses on the Square will be turned on and available for use that day, it was reported.

Members of the public can sample each chili or soup that day by purchasing a bag of small tasting bowls for $5 a person in front of The Holton Recorder (south side of the Square) that morning.

Each bag will contain enough tasting bowls to sample all the chili and soup, as well as a ticket to vote for your favorite chili. Tickets can be deposited at the booth serving your favorite recipe.

Chili and soup competitors are expected to be located along the sidewalks on all four sides of the Square that day, it was reported.

All proceeds from the purchase of the tasting bowls will be donated to the Holton Fire Department.

In addition, members of the public can also purchase a larger bowl of their favorite recipe from the participating cooks, who are encouraged to donate a portion of those proceeds to the fire department. Each cook will set the price of any larger bowls sold.

Like previous years, various prizes will be awarded including “People’s Choice,” “Best Chili,” “Best Soup” and “Fire Chief’s Favorite.”

The best chili cook will receive $50 in Chamber Bucks and five free tickets to the Kansas City Renaissance Festival. The people’s choice winner will receive a one-year subscription to The Holton Recorder

In addition to the chili cook-off, a Fall Fest Vintage Market is being held on the Courthouse lawn that day. A variety of items will be for sale, and a petting zoo is also being set up.

At 6:30 p.m., Holton Community Theatre is presenting the musical “Nunsense” as a dinner theater at Penny’s on the west side of the Square. A matinee performance of “Nunesense” will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
