Candidates to meet with area voters Saturday

A total of 14 candidates seeking county, state and national offices during the general election will be available to meet with voters during an informal event Saturday in Holton. 

The “Meet The Candidates” event will be held from 10 a.m. to noon at the Jackson County Courthouse meeting room, which is located on the first floor of the Courthouse. 

The public event is being organized by The Holton Recorder, The Holton/Jackson County Chamber of Commerce and courthouse staff.

Candidates who have responded that they plan to attend the event include:

* Democrat Patrick Wiesner of Lawrence, who is seeking the U.S. Senate seat.

* Democrat Britani Potter of Ottawa, who is running for U.S. House of Representatives District 2.

* Republican Dennis Pyle of Hiawatha, who is seeking re-election to the Kansas Senate representing the First District. 

* Democrat Jerry Henry of Atchison, who is running for the First District seat on the Kansas Senate.

* Republican Randy Garber of Sabetha, who is seeking re-election to the District 62nd seat in the Kansas House of Representatives. 

* Democrat Lauren Van Wagoner of Hoyt, who is seeking election to the 61st District seat on the Kansas House of Representatives.

* Republican Francis Awerkamp of St. Marys, who is running for the 61st District seat on the Kansas House of Representatives.

* Democrat Tim Morse of Holton, who is seeking re-election as county sheriff.

* Republican Bob McNicholas of Netawaka, who is also seeking the county sheriff’s seat. 

* Republican Janet Zwonitzer of Holton, who is seeking re-election to the Second District seat on the Jackson County Commission.

* Ed Lutz of Holton, who is running for the Second District seat on the Jackson County Commission. Lutz is running as an Independent.

* Democrat Bill Elmer of Hoyt, who is seeking re-election to the Third District seat on the Jackson County Commission.

* John Coleman of Denison, who is running for the Third District seat on the Jackson County Commission. Coleman is running as an Independent.

* Republican Melvin Bailey of Mayetta, who is also running for the Third District seat on the Jackson County Commission. 

Members of the public will be able to meet and interact with all the candidates and individually ask them questions. Candidates will be allowed to distribute campaign information at the event. Refreshments will also be served. 

In addition to Saturday’s forum, a candidate “meet and greet” is being held this today at 7 p.m. at the community building in Hoyt. 

A candidate forum is also being held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, at Penny’s on the west side of the Holton Square.

A catered dinner, desserts and drinks will be provided, and several guest speakers are planned. For more information, see the ad on page 8 of this edition of The Holton Recorder
