Annual City-Wide Cleanup moves to new location

Got some leftover items from this past weekend’s City-Wide Garage Sales that you couldn’t sell, but wouldn’t consider bringing back into your home?

This Saturday, May 2, Holton residents will have the opportunity to get rid of unwanted junk and other materials not needed around the home for no charge at the annual City-Wide Spring Cleanup Day, to be held at a new location this year.

In previous years, city residents were able to bring their unwanted items and materials for disposal at the old Jackson County Fairgrounds. Since that option is no longer available, the event is being held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the soccer fields at Countryside Park, south of First Street on Pennsylvania Avenue. No soccer games are scheduled that day, it was reported.

Restrictions on accepted materials will be enforced at the site, including proof of Holton residency. No contractor or commercial business material may be disposed of at the site, and the City of Holton, which conducts the annual clean-up event, reserves the right to refuse any material.

Materials accepted at the site include carpet, clothing, paper, cardboard, furniture, mattresses, clean wood, shingles, tar paper, cabinets, porcelain fixtures, wire, metal, appliances without refrigerant, water heaters, sinks, iron and other similar material.

Hazardous household waste (i.e. chemicals) will also be collected at the site, it was reported. The Jackson County Hazardous Waste trailer will be present.

Items that will not be accepted by city personnel at the site include household trash, tires, paint, oil, gasoline, batteries, chemicals and other hazardous materials. Yard waste such as tree limbs and brush also will not be accepted at the site, but may be taken to the city’s brush disposal site that day at no charge.
