Accident claims Topeka woman's life

An accident in southern Jackson County Wednesday evening claimed the life of Topeka woman, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Jacqueline Lovanna Moore Wilson, 56, Topeka was killed after the 2003 Oldsmobile Alero she was driving collided with a 2012 Freightliner Ryder truck at the intersection of U.S. Highway 75 and Kansas Highway 214, which is also known as 110th Road.

According to KHP, Wilson’s vehicle with traveling north in the right-hand lane of the highway at 7:10 p.m. when it collided with the semi, after its driver, Christopher Smart, 33, of Charlotte, N.C., failed to yield at a stop sign while attempting to cross the highway.

Both Smart and Wilson were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, according to the report, as well as the two passengers in Wilson’s Alero, Dwayne Laniar Anderson, 54, Norton, and Shelli I. Zarazua, 50, Topeka.

Anderson was injured in the accident and listed in “disabled” condition and was transported to a Topeka hospital. Zarazua and Smart did not report any injuries.

Both vehicles were towed from the scene.

Jackson County EMS, Hoyt Fire, Mayetta Fire, Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation Fire and the Jackson County Sheriff's Office all responded to the scene, as well as KHP and the Kansas Department of Transportation.

Funeral services for Wilson were scheduled for 5 p.m. today at Bowser-Johnson Funeral Chapel in Topeka.

Traffic was detoured through the city of Hoyt for several hours after the accident, and Jackson County Sheriff Tim Morse said the sheriff’s office worked an additional accident just south of the scene of the initial accident.

At 7:49 p.m., Peggy Schuetz, 59, Hoyt, was stopped in traffic north on the highway due to the accident when her 2008 Dodge was rear ended by a 2013 Chevrolet driven by Walter Perry, 67, Junction City.

Schuetz’s vehicle sustained damage to its rear bumper. Perry’s vehicle sustained damage to its front bumper, hood and front right and left quarter panels that was listed at more than $1,000. It was towed from the scene.
